NIE (Número Identidad Extranjero)

NIE (Número Identidad Extranjero)

NIE is the Foreigner’s Identification Number assigned by the Spanish National Police to foreign residents who don’t have Spanish citizenship. It is also needed by non-residents so that they can carry out legal activities in Spain. Having the NIE is not proof of residency.

Here are the most common procedures for which you will need a Spanish NIE number:
1. Opening a bank account in Spain
2. Buying/ selling property in Spain
3. Buying or selling motor vehicles
4. Being legally employed
5. Paying taxes in Spain
6. Registering a business in Spain
7. Becoming self-employed in Spain
8. Studying in Spain
9. Securing a Spanish driving licence or exchanging your national licence for a Spanish one (if resident)
10. Arranging utilities in Spain

An NIE number is mandatory for all foreigners with financial, professional, or social affairs in Spain, regardless of whether they are resident or non-resident in Spain. Children also need an NIE number in order to, among other things, obtain social security eligibility.

European citizens typically need to apply for an NIE number after three months of residence in Spain, while non-EU citizens will typically receive their NIE along with their Spanish residency document. The actual format of the number certificate is an A4 white sheet that contains your name, surname, date of birth, city and country of birth, and of course the unique number.

NIE application;
NIE applications can be submitted while living or visiting Spain to the relevant Spanish National Police station dedicated to foreign documentation (Ronda is your nearest office to Gaucin). You can also apply for an NIE number at the Spanish Embassy located in your country. In Spain, the NIE number can be requested either by you or via an authorised person (notary, solicitor, relative or friend) holding a Spanish power of attorney.

You can apply for your NIE online:

A useful English version can be found at the following link but please note that the final form must be submitted in Spanish.  https://ankaravisa.es/

Remember:
•The NIE number certificate described here does not mean Spanish residency. This requires separate documents and procedures, although the Spanish residency card (or TIE for non-EU) displays the number.
•Your NIE number is permanent
•You won’t be able to exchange your foreign driving licence in Spain if you only have the NIE number. You must have Spanish residency.
•Take your number certificate with you, along with your passport, if you need to make a police report
•Make copies of your NIE document and keep the original in a safe place at home
